HOW GABO MINISTRY STARTED

On July 27th, 1998,  Sommy Erekosima had an encounter in which Jesus Christ physically touched him on the face. He had an incredible experience just like that of the Apostles in Acts chapter two. It is the Ministry of the Holy Spirit to gather like-minded people together into one body for revival. It begins like a tongue of fire on one person and then spread to the birth of a Body of spirit-filled Christians. That was how GABO Ministry initially called Kalabari Prayer Network (KPN) began in August 2000.

For some time Sommy was having strong impression in his heart that a revival is necessary, particularly to address the people’s age-long allegiance to the Akaso deity as well as their obedience to the observance of idol tradition which goes contrary to Christian belief. He had a productive conversation with two other burdens, Deacon Tonjo Kio-Lawson and Henry Tobin-West which bothered on the declining spiritual state of the Kalabari kingdom. They expressed their concern about what should be done to change the narrative. As the conversation progressed, they reasoned that God was expressing His jealousy against the continual worship of Akaso by the Kalabari people and calling them to deliver the land.

Whenever God purpose to do a thing, He gives the vision to chosen vessels and makes the provisions for the vision. It was as if someone blew a trumpet; overnight, many Brethren from Faith Baptist Church, Emmanuel Baptist Church, and Assemblies of God Church, Mile One, joined them to seek God’s face in prayer. It became a prayer movement that attracted like-minded Christians from various Churches.

Redeeming the land & revival
Jesus said, “How can one enter into the house of the strong [man,] and spoil his goods, except he first binds the strongman? and then he will spoil his house. Matthew 12:29.
When we gathered at my Oroworukwo residence our prayer request was single; “Oh God, we bind Akaso deity, deliver our people from the Akaso stronghold in Jesus’ mighty Name.”Revivals are birthed only after agonizing prayer and waiting. How did we go about it? Prayer, prayer, and much Prayer.

In those prayer meetings at Ovunwon Street, God spoke expressly to us, giving us words of encouragement and strict warning of what we will face, “Do not be discouraged and do not accept financial assistance from unbelievers.” This instruction we gladly obliged with. As expected, some prominent personalities discouraged us, they magnified Akaso power saying that we are treading on dangerous ground. According to Leviticus 25:23-26, what we need is faith in the finished work of Christ and the collaboration of the Chiefs and Pastors in the land.

our main goals

Accordingly, the team moved the prayer meeting to Buguma which benefited the home-based prayer warriors like Pastor Otto, Bro Ikiloju, Pastor Tonye Princewill, Brother Mpaka George, and Bethany Wokoma. Also, the reason for meeting the home-based Pastors was for effective collaboration and mobilization of their members to the crusade. The reason to meet the Chiefs was not to solicit funds, but rather, to solicit for their presence, confessions, and renunciations as prominent Chiefs of Buguma; this is necessary when it comes to bringing deliverance in the land. Fortunately, both the Pastors and the Chiefs agreed that Akaso should be sacked from Kalabari land.

Consequently, the 3-day crusade in Buguma was held on 18 -20th December 2000, and it was widely acclaimed as the most attended crusade in the region.

Three things happened on the first day of the crusade that became the talk of the town. The weather was fully set to fall to drown a duck but the hand of God stopped it miraculously. Hitherto, no Minister had preached boldly against idol worship and the worship of Akaso. Thirdly, a girl who was cripple from birth was miraculously healed. These three attracted the crowd.

The day following, 21st December, the team gathered to thank God for the success of the crusade. Then the Holy Spirit expressly spoke to the body of believers present, “I have driven Akaso out of Kalabari Kingdom forever and there will be evidence for many to know that I the Lord have done this.” That was an exciting news. So with the satisfaction of the mission accomplished, we were glad to collapse the team and disperse to our various homes.

The choice of GABO Leader
The Lord assured us; “I have driven Akaso out of Kalabari Kingdom forever and there will be evidence for many to know that I the Lord have done this.” To say we were excited by this assurance was an understatement. So with the satisfaction of the mission accomplished, we were glad to disperse to our various homes. We didn’t realize that God was not through with us yet.

We didn’t realize that God was not through with us yet. Suddenly, Pastor Henry Tobin-West gave a prophecy concerning the plan for the Body and who is to lead it. Pastor Tonjo Kio-Lawson and Pastor Noble Greene gave prophecy as well. All three said the same thing; “I the Lord have chosen Sommy Erekosima as my David to take the gospel throughout his Jerusalem and to other nations of the world.” I have prepared Him for he is my vessel to break strongholds Says the Lord.” So in the mouth of these three witnesses, the Word was confirmed.

That was how we decides to continue under the leadership that The Lord divinely chose, just in the same manner He chose Apostle Peter to lead the Disciples. It was on that beautiful note that the missionary journey of taking the gospel to the nations began.
